The benefits of activated charcoal has been discussed at length by so many people and there are countless articles on the internet explaining the pro's and con's of using charcoal in food. We believe there is one big pro to using the black stuff - the look! The topping we are recommending for a black pizza is our veggie garden option, just because the colours of the veggies really pop on the black background :)

INGREDIENTS

For black pizza

Basic pizza dough (your prefered recipe or use our basic one)

8 tablets activated charcoal or if using charcoal powder about 6 teaspoons full

Black food dye

Veggie garden Pizza toppings

Butternut,

Mushrooms

Cocktail tomatoes

Mozzarella

Fresh basil

Red onion

Feta

To modify your pizza dough recipe, do the following.

Add the activated Charcoal in powdered form to the flour. Grind up the tablets to powder them.

Add the food dye to the water to incorporate evenly in the dough

Roast the butternut, tomatoes and onion in the oven until caramelized

Put a little of your pizza sauce on the pre-baked base, add a good handful of mozzarella

add the rest of the toppings, feta last and back to the oven until all the cheese has melted.

Quick tip for roasting the butternut

Butternut can take a while to soften in the oven. If you are in a rush, place the butternut in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and microwave for about 5 to 7 minutes. This will fully cook the butternut. all you have to do then is place the cooked butternut under the grill with the tomatoes until roasted, which will take less than 5 minutes.
